WTI Oil Yearly High Odds on Kalshi as Crude Tops $100
QUICK PICK
WTI crude crossed $100 a barrel Monday as the U.S.-Iran war chokes oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, and Kalshi’s WTI yearly high contracts suggest traders see real but uncertain odds of a historic price spike — the $150 tier trades at a YES bid of 36¢ / ask of 40¢, implying roughly a one-in-three chance oil reaches that level before year-end.
THE SETUP
The KXWTIMAX series tracks the daily settlement price of NYMEX/CME’s front-month WTI crude futures contract, consistent with the 2:30 PM ET daily settlement convention governing that contract’s pricing. Each tier — $150, $160, and $180 — pays $1.00 if WTI closes above that price at any point before the contract expires. Goldman Sachs estimates Hormuz oil flows have collapsed by roughly 97%, and Rystad Energy forecasts Brent hitting $135 if the conflict stretches four months — which would likely drag WTI well above $120.
THE STRATEGY
All three tiers show zero 24-hour volume and zero open interest, so these bids and asks reflect market-maker pricing rather than matched participant trades. The spread at the $180 tier — 19¢ bid / 20¢ ask — is the tightest of the three at just 1¢, suggesting that’s where what little price discovery exists is concentrated and making it the most liquid of the group from an execution standpoint, while the $150 tier’s 4¢ spread (36¢ bid / 40¢ ask) is actually the widest — meaning that although the $150 tier represents the most actionable entry point in terms of proximity to current price levels, traders should expect less favorable fills there compared to the tighter-spread $180 tier. The $180 tier sits at 19¢ bid / 20¢ ask, meaning even in a scenario where oil doubles from current levels, traders price it as a roughly one-in-five chance. JPMorgan has separately warned that sustained oil above $90 could trigger a 10-15% S&P 500 correction, which tracks with the S&P positive-growth contract trading at a YES bid of 54¢ — just barely above even odds for a positive year.
THE PAYOFF
The $150 tier (KXWTIMAX-26DEC31-T150) is the most actionable entry point given last-traded price of 37¢. The catalyst to watch is conflict duration: Rystad’s four-month scenario puts Brent at $135, which would close the gap meaningfully toward that strike.
CONTRACT NOTES
Settlement triggers on the first 10:00 AM ET window after WTI closes above the threshold — meaning a single qualifying daily settle is enough. Buyers do not need prices to stay elevated. This is market commentary, not financial advice. Always verify contract terms and do your own research before placing any trades.
