WTI $150 Contract Bids at 28¢ as Iran War Deepens on Kalshi

THE MOVE

Buy YES on KXWTIMAX-26DEC31-T150, bid at 28¢ and offered at 29¢. The KXUSAIRANAGREEMENT-27-26MAY contract — tied to prospects of a US-Iran nuclear agreement — saw 394 contracts in 24-hour volume at a last price of 9¢, as geopolitical uncertainty continues to weigh on prospects for a deal that could relieve oil markets. Brent crude is already above $100, up more than 40% since the war began.

THE CONTEXT

The contract resolves YES if WTI front-month settles above $150.01 on any single trading day before December 31, 2026 — it does not require $150 to hold, only to print once. Wood Mackenzie identifies $150 as the threshold at which demand destruction begins to rebalance a market that has lost 15 million barrels per day of Gulf supply. The IEA calls this the worst oil disruption in history; Wood Mackenzie Chairman Simon Flowers states “$200 per barrel is not outside the realms of possibility in 2026.”

THE IMPLICATION

Spread compression between the $150 strike (KXWTIMAX-26DEC31-T150) and $160 strike (KXWTIMAX-26DEC31-T160) implies traders view $160 as nearly as probable as $150 once the threshold breaks — consistent with a supply shock rather than a gradual price grind. The $180 strike (KXWTIMAX-26DEC31-T180) bids at 18¢ with open interest of 136,808 contracts, the largest of the three, suggesting long-term positioning rather than short-term speculation.

RIPPLE EFFECTS

Diplomatic signals remain deeply conflicted: Trump claims negotiations are underway while Iran’s foreign minister denies any talks are taking place. The Recession contract (KXRECSSNBER-26) bids at 33¢ with 290,278 contracts of open interest — the highest in the orderbook — pricing the oil shock as a credible path to U.S. contraction by January 31, 2027.

THE RISK TO THE CALL

A successor negotiating team reconstitutes Iran’s diplomatic channel faster than markets expect, a deal is struck before summer, and WTI reverses below $100 before a single $150.01 daily settlement prints — leaving the 28¢ to 29¢ entry a total loss.
