Trump China visit odds split sharply on Kalshi as delay pushes timeline past May 1

THE MOVE

The KXTRUMPCHINA series on Kalshi has a contract (KXTRUMPCHINA-26-MAY08) showing a YES bid/ask spread of 56–64 cents, though open interest and volume are currently zero, meaning the spread reflects only quoted prices without any confirmed trading activity to validate it as a reliable directional signal. The “Before May 1, 2026” contract (KXTRUMPCHINA-26-MAY01) trades at a bid of 23¢ / ask of 31¢, with a last-traded price of 25¢ — the only contract in the series to have printed. A contract tracking whether a visit will occur before a specific date is listed under the KXFTAPRC series on Kalshi, categorized under Politics. The “Before May 8” contract (KXTRUMPCHINA-26-MAY08) sits at a bid of 56¢ / ask of 64¢. The YES bid of 56¢ on the KXTRUMPCHINA-26-MAY08 contract reflects the market’s current assessment of the probability that Trump will visit China by May 8, 2026.

THE CONTEXT

All three contracts share the same Last Trading Date as their Expiration Date, and expiration may be moved to an earlier date and time if a payout criterion event occurs, in accordance with Rule 7.2. Layovers, flyovers, and embassy-only appearances do not qualify. The original Beijing visit would have been the first by a sitting U.S. president since Trump’s own 2017 trip during his first term, but with the visit now effectively postponed, whether such a historic meeting would ultimately take place remained uncertain, and senior officials acknowledged they no longer knew if the Beijing summit with Xi Jinping would be rescheduled at all. Trump told reporters he does not know whether the Beijing meeting with Xi Jinping will happen at all.

THE IMPLICATION

The May 8 contract at a bid of 56¢ / ask of 64¢ implies traders assign roughly a 6-in-10 probability that a compliant visit occurs within the next two months. The single strongest risk to that call is the Iran conflict escalating further — specifically, a potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which carries roughly one-fifth of global oil flows, which could give the administration further reason to postpone or cancel the China trip entirely.

RIPPLE EFFECTS

The separate KXFTAPRC-29 contract, tracking a U.S.-China free trade agreement before January 20, 2029, last traded at 42¢ with a current bid of 38¢ / ask of 42¢ and zero 24-hour volume. A canceled or further-delayed Beijing summit would remove the primary near-term catalyst for FTA progress, putting pressure on that contract’s YES side.
