Kalshi Recession Contract at 33¢ — Repricing Speed, Not Level, Is the Signal
– HSBC’s regime model jumped from 10% to 35% recession probability in two weeks, a 25-point shift now embedded in equity markets.
– KXRECSSNBER-26 sits at a YES bid of 32¢ / ask of 33¢ with 296,132 contracts in OI but only 12,004 traded in 24 hours.
– The structural edge is velocity: the contract repriced 50% in one week but remains a slow-clearing book, vulnerable to abrupt gapping.
THE MISPRICING
KXRECSSNBER-26 trades at a YES bid of 32¢ / ask of 33¢, OI of 296,132 contracts, with only 12,004 in 24-hour volume, consistent with an online prediction market’s 33% signal. HSBC strategists Pinder and Agarwala place equity-derived recession probability at 35% — 2 points above Kalshi’s ask of 33¢. That gap is small, but the velocity is not: Kalshi odds moved from 22¢ to 33¢ in one week, a 50% relative increase, yet remain 9 points below the 42¢ peak recorded during July 2025 stress.
THE CONTRACT
KXRECSSNBER-26 resolves YES if at least two consecutive quarters of negative real GDP growth are confirmed by BEA data. Oil prices at current levels push US inflation to 3.7%, per Royal Bank of Canada, mechanically threatening Fed easing. The US shed 92,000 jobs in February with unemployment at 4.4%.
THE RISK TO THE CALL
An online prediction market’s 37% signal may already be discounting a trade-shock scenario that de-escalates before BEA data confirms two negative quarters. With only 12,004 contracts clearing daily against 296,132 in OI, a correct directional call can sit underwater for weeks before thin flow reprices the book.
