Fed Hold Contracts Bid 56¢ as Iran War Scrambles Rate Path on Kalshi

IN SHORT:

Middle East tensions have added uncertainty to the inflation and employment outlook, with Fed officials expected to emphasize these risks while keeping the rate path largely intact from December’s projections, which indicated just one cut this year while separately projecting a median forecast of two 25 basis point cuts in 2026.

THE MOVE

The KXFEDDECISION-18MAR-H0 “Fed maintains rate” contract sits at a YES bid of 56¢ and YES ask of 62¢, with open interest of 320 contracts and a last trade of 57¢. That pricing aligns tightly with CME FedWatch showing a 99% probability of a hold at the March 18 meeting — up dramatically from 70% just one month ago. Rising oil prices and elevated gasoline costs, driven partly by Middle East conflict, have reignited inflation expectations that make any cut politically and economically difficult. January PCE already printed at 2.9% year-over-year against the Fed’s 2% target before the energy shock landed. The Fed is widely expected to hold its target federal funds rate between 3.5% and 3.75%, though markets are not entirely ruling out a hike, as reflected in residual pricing of the ‘Hike 25bps’ contract. The 5¢ bid on the contract tracking three or more Fed dissents reinforces the view that the Fed is seen as frozen rather than hawkish, even with inflation running hot.

THE DATA

The most active signal in the complex is the dissent series. KXFOMCDISSENTCOUNT-26MAR-2, pricing a 2-dissenter outcome, shows a YES bid of 58¢ and YES ask of 62¢ with 1,498 contracts of 24-hour volume. Compare that to KXFOMCDISSENTCOUNT-26MAR-3, which bids at 5¢ and asks at 10¢ against a total series volume of 23,908 — the highest in the dissent series overall — suggesting traders have concentrated probability on exactly 2 dissenters while rejecting the high-dissent scenario.

THE CONTEXT

The March 18 FOMC meeting requires the Fed to absorb three simultaneous pressures: a February labor market that shed 92,000 jobs against expectations of growth, PCE inflation at 2.9%, and an energy shock from the Iran conflict. The contract resolves based on the FOMC’s stated decision on the target federal funds rate range, with no adjustment for post-expiration revisions. If the Fed cancels the March 18 meeting, the “No change” contract resolves YES and all other strikes resolve NO — a tail risk that is not zero given current institutional uncertainty around Fed leadership.

THE IMPLICATION

The Atlanta Fed’s Market Probability Tracker shows a 19.82% probability of a 25 basis point rate hike later this year, standing in sharp contrast to the FOMC’s December dot plot projecting a median forecast of two 25 basis point cuts in 2026. The medium-term contract KXFED-27APR-T4.00 — pricing the fed funds rate above 4.00% by April 2027 — bids at 26¢ and asks at 32¢ with 775 contracts of open interest, suggesting markets assign meaningful but minority probability to tightening, not easing, over the next 13 months.

THE RISK TO THE CALL

The thesis breaks if the Iran conflict de-escalates faster than expected, pulling oil back below $90 and allowing weak jobs data to dominate the Fed narrative, reviving cut expectations and sending the hold contract lower. A surprise Powell statement or geopolitical headline before March 18 could push KXFEDDECISION-28JAN-H0 to 70¢ or collapse it to 40¢ intraday — forcing a position exit before the thesis resolves, particularly on a contract with only 320 contracts of open interest and a 6¢ bid/ask spread.
